Notes:
The Von Braun class SDN is a modification of the Van Tegetthoff SDN. After
field tests showed that a single SML provided little to to tactical
advantage, two courses of action were decided upon. 1) All existing Von
Tegetthoff's would be accompanied by not less than 3 Walberg/M DDs. 2) A
redesign of the Von Tegetthoff would be initiated. The Von Braun is the result
of that redesign. The Von Braun keeps the same hull, armor, engines, fighter
grouup, and most weapony of the original. The single Salvo Missile system is
exchanged for two pulse torpedo launchers. The two class-1 beam systems are
exchanged for two additional PDS systems. An ADFC is added. And a nasty
suprise for any ship following too close, a submunitions pack was added to
the aft arc of the ship. Most of the Von Braun Hamptman exchange standard
fighters for intercepters and have the fighter group screen the Von Braun from
missiles and other fighters.
[Data note: Added "(Military)" to the Hull line - this record had no Military/Merchant type suffix at all. Recovered from its declared Crew (10) matching the Military Crew Factor formula (ceil(200/20) = 10), not the Merchant one (ceil(200/50) = 4).]
[Data note: Mass corrected from 200 to 204 - the declared Mass did not
cover the ship's own listed components (Hull, drives, weapons, etc.), which sum to
204. Verified formula-by-formula against the original 1998 tool - every component
matches its own arithmetic exactly, so this is a genuine discrepancy in the original
submission's declared Mass, not a parser or calculation bug. Raised to match its own
components rather than altering any weapon/system to fit the old, too-small figure.]
[Data note: Cost corrected from 672 (690) to 688 (706) - a direct consequence of
the Mass correction above (Cost includes 1 point per MASS as its base component).
The fighter-cost premium itself (+18) is unchanged, since Fighter Bay cost depends
on bay count, not overall ship Mass.]
